Utah’s court system consists of various courts that hear different types of cases. The lowest court in this structure is the Justice Court.

Cases Heard in the West Jordan Justice Court

Criminal Charges

The Justice Court can handle criminal cases, but only Class B and C misdemeanors or lesser offenses. Compared to felony charges, Class B and C misdemeanors are relatively minor, although they come with possible jail time and fines. A Class C misdemeanor may be punished by up to90 days in jail and a $750 fine. A Class B misdemeanor may be punished by up to 6 months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Small Claims

The Justice Court also handles small claims cases, which are civil rather than criminal matters. A small claims case often involves monetary damages of a relatively small amount. Ordinarily, civil matters may be heard in the District Court, but if the money involved is not substantial, it can be removed to Justice Court.

According to Utah Code § 78A-8-102(1), a case filed on or after May 4, 2022 through December 21, 2024, valued at no more than $15,000, should be heard in small claims court. In many cases, people file their claims in District Court only to find out they are in the wrong court, and their case is removed to Justice Court.

“I was arrested for DUI. From the very beginning Darwin was very professional and supportive. Throughout the court process I was scared. “Several years ago, I was having troubles in my marriage. There were lots of arguments and it was clear that we were headed for a separation.
