Tooele County Jail Visitation Hours and Rules for Visitors

The Tooele County Jail (Tooele County Detention Center) is located at 47 S. Main St. in Tooele, Utah 84074.  It contains 277 beds and houses both male and female inmates, with security levels ranging from minimum security to maximum security.  In this article, a Salt Lake City criminal defense lawyer will explain visiting hours and policies at the Tooele County Jail, including how to schedule visits over web cam.

Rules and Restrictions for Visiting an Inmate

As you can imagine, jails are extremely strict when it comes to security measures.  It’s very important that you follow the jail’s rules during your visit, or else you could be asked to leave.  By brushing up on the basics before your visit, you can make your session that much smoother and simpler.

First, you should know about the dress code.  Visitors to the Tooele County Jail must be covered “from neck to kneecaps,” which means you are not allowed to wear the following items regardless of your gender:

• No tank-tops
• No muscle shirts
• No v-neck t-shirts
• No short-shorts
• No mini-skirts
• No halter tops
• No tube tops
• No strapless dresses
• No half-shirts or belly shirts
• No low-cut shirts

You must be completely sober when you visit.  If you seem to be intoxicated or under the influence of drugs when you arrive, you will be asked to leave the jail, even if you do not have any alcohol or narcotics with you.

On a related note, the jail will force “disorderly” visitors to leave (even if they are completely sober).  That means no swearing, no yelling, no taunting the inmates or jail personnel, and no fighting or making threats.  If you wouldn’t do it in front of a police officer, don’t do it at the jail.

On-Site Visitation Hours at the Toole County Jail

Visitors to the Tooele County Jail should be advised that on-site visits do not take place in person.  Instead, on-site visits are conducted as “video visits” over video terminals which are located at the jail.  (The jail also offers web-based, remote video visits for long-distance loved ones, which we will discuss in the next section.)

While visiting slots are open seven days a week, visits may only be scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays, between the hours of 9:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M.

First, you need to determine which housing unit the inmate is housed in, because visiting hours are based on housing.  To get this information, call Jail Commander Lt. Ray Clinton at (435) 277-4200.

Once you know the right housing unit, you can figure out when you want to visit.  Tooele County Jail visiting hours are:

• Units A, B, F, and G
  • Monday through Sunday
  • 8:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M.
  • 12:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.

• Unit C
  • Monday through Sunday
  • 8:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M.
  • 12:00 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.

• Units D and E
  • Monday through Sunday
  • 8:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M.
  • 12:00 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.
  • Since visiting times for Units D and E periodically change, you should confirm your visit with the jail in case the hours have shifted.

• Units H1-H4
  • Monday through Sunday
  • 8:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M.
  • 5:00 P.M. to 9:30 P.M.

• Units H5-H8
  • Monday through Sunday
  • 12:00 P.M. to 3:30 P.M.

How to Schedule a Remote Video Visit

If you live far away from the jail, on-site visits probably aren’t practical.  Fortunately, distance doesn’t have to be an obstacle to seeing your loved one.  Instead of making a flight or long drive out to Utah, you can simply schedule a remote video visit, which is similar to using Skype or FaceTime.

Remote video visits are managed through a service called iWebVisit.  All you need to get started is a computer with an internet connection, a web cam for the video, and a set of speakers for the audio.

Here are the steps to get started scheduling your remote video visit:

1. Visit the iWebVisit website (iwebvisit.com).
2. Click the orange “Sign In” button.
   1. If you already have an account, simply enter your login information.
   2. If you’re a new user, click the link that says “Create Account Here!” (When creating a new account, you will be prompted to type in your name, email address, and a password.)
3. Follow the prompts to choose the day and time of your remote visit.

Unfortunately, you cannot have spontaneous visits.  Remote video visits have to be scheduled at least one full day in advance (up to three weeks in advance).

The jail sets daily, weekly, and monthly caps on the number of remote visits which are permitted, and reserves the right to cancel scheduled visits.  Visits will also be denied if the inmate refuses to accept the visitor.  The fee for remote video visits is $10 per visit, except for the first visit of each month, which costs $12.

Last but not least, please be advised that undressing over web cam is strictly prohibited, as is any illegal activity.  If you break these rules, be prepared for the following consequences:

• The visit will be cut off.
• You will not be allowed to make any more visits.
• If you engage in illegal activity, you’ll be criminally charged (e.g. drug charges for drug use).
• The inmate will lose their visiting privileges.

The same rules – and consequences for breaking them – also apply to on-site video visits.
