How to Contact an Inmate at Box Elder County Jail

Rules for Sending Mail to the Box Elder County Jail

Inmates are allowed to both send and receive mail, provided it complies with the facility’s policies.  If you break any of the jail’s rules – for example, by sending contraband – the mail could be returned to sender.  If the mail contains any illegal items, it could even result in criminal prosecution.  However, if you feel your mail was returned unjustly or accidentally, you may appeal (challenge) the issue by calling Jail Commander Sandy Huthman at (435) 734-3827 between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday.

All pieces of mail must be clearly marked with your first name, last name, and return address, as well as the inmate’s first and last name as indicated in the mailing address above.  You are not allowed to add any doodles or decorations to the envelope containing the mail.

Acceptable forms of mail include:

• Cardstock (thick, heavy paper available at most office supply stores), measuring no larger than 8.5” x 11”.
• Postcards mailed via the U.S. Postal Service.
• Up to 10 photographs, provided that:
  • You clearly print the word “photographs” on the envelope containing them.
  • They do not depict illegal or pornographic subject matter.
  • They are no larger than 4” x 6”.
• They are not Polaroids.
  Paperback books, provided they are mailed directly to the jail from the original publisher or retailer. No hardcover publications are allowed.
• Money orders, which will be credited to the inmate’s account so that he or she can purchase commissary items or place outgoing phone calls. (Scroll down to the next section to read more about depositing funds to an inmate’s account.)

Prohibited forms of mail include:

• Drawings or photographs that depict obscenity or illegal activities, including drugs, weapons, and gang signs.
• Envelopes with drawings, doodles, or decorations on the outside, like glitter or lipstick.
• Envelopes that are missing your name and return address.
• Clippings from magazines, books, newspapers, or printed web articles.

How to Deposit Money to an Inmate’s Account for Prepaid Phone Calls

Inmates at the Box Elder County Jail are not allowed to possess cash.  Therefore, you may want to add money to your loved one’s financial account, which he or she can then use to call you, purchase goods from the commissary, or cover other expenses.

Fortunately, it’s quick and easy to deposit funds to an inmate account.  Just choose a method and follow the instructions below:

• Mail a money order to the jail, or bring one in person. Use the mailing address provided above.  Please note the jail does not accept cash or personal checks.
• Use your debit or credit card to deposit funds online. To use this method, follow these steps:
  1. Navigate to payforstay (dot) com. This is the website the Box Elder County Jail uses to process financial transactions.
  2. You’ll see three options: “pay my pay for stay fees or review my account,” “make a bail payment,” and “deposit money into an inmate’s account.” Click the option that says “deposit money into an inmate’s account.”
  3. You’ll be taken to a screen with a green box that says “find an inmate.” Enter the inmate’s first name, last name, and inmate number, selecting Box Elder County from the county dropdown menu.
  4. Follow the prompts to complete your transaction.
