Utah is home to nearly 3 million people inhabiting about 250 communities. While no town or city is 100% free of crime, certain communities are safer than others. Salt Lake City criminal defense lawyer Darwin Overson compares recent crime statistics in different communities to see which towns and cities in Utah are the safest. Hopefully, you’ll spot your hometown on the list.
List of the 10 Safest Cities in Utah Ranked by Crime Statistics
The best place to live in Utah is obviously a matter of personal opinion. If you’re an avid fan of winter sports, you might enjoy Park City, which is home to the country’s largest ski resort. If you’re looking for fast-paced urban life with a thriving arts and music scene, Salt Lake City or West Valley City might be just the place. If you prefer something a little closer to nature, consider looking beyond the Wasatch Front counties (where about 75% of the population is concentrated).
Whatever you’re looking for in a new town or city, chances are that safety will be a major decision factor. And while each of Utah’s communities has something unique to offer, only a few can claim the title of “safest.” But which ones?
Earlier this year, real estate website HomeSnacks crunched data from the FBI’s 2015 Uniform Crime Report, including data on:
- Total crimes per capita
- Property crimes per capita (such as arson in Utah)
- Violent crimes per capita (such as murder in Utah and rape in Utah)
HomeSnacks used the data to rank the 10 safest cities in Utah. Here were the communities that made HomeSnacks’ cut for the 10 safest Utah cities:
- Smithfield (Cache County)
- Pleasant Grove (Utah County)
- Mapleton (Utah County)
- Saratoga Springs (Utah County)
- Spanish Fork (Utah County)
- Salem (Utah County)
- Clinton (Davis County)
- Syracuse (Davis County)
- Lehi (Utah County)
- Pleasant View (Weber County)
Alarms.org made its own list using a more recent version of the same FBI report, this time analyzing preliminary crime statistics from 2016. Some towns managed to maintain their positions, while others experienced an increase in crime that lowered their rank or dropped them from the list completely. A few new cities (and counties) also found their way onto the updated list. Here’s what changed from 2015 to 2016:
- Smithfield (Cache County)
- Ephraim (Sanpete County)
- Pleasant Grove (Utah County)
- Saratoga Springs (Utah County)
- Santa Clara and Ivins (Washington County)
- Santaquin and Genola (Utah/Juab Counties, Utah County)
- Salem (Utah County)
- Spanish Fork (Utah County)
- Lehi (Utah County)
- Clinton (Davis County)
If you compare these two lists…
- Smithfield, Saratoga Springs, and Lehi maintained their positions (number one, number four, and number nine, respectively).
- Spanish Fork and Clinton both slipped three places. Spanish Fork dropped from number five to number eight, while Clinton dropped from number seven to last place.
- Salem and Pleasant Grove each slipped one place. Salem dropped from number six to number seven, while Pleasant Grove fell from number two to number three.
- Mapleton, Syracuse, and Pleasant View dropped off the list completely.
- Ephraim, which failed to make the cut in 2015, made a strong second place debut on the 2016 list. Ephraim was also the only city in Sanpete County to make the list.
- Other new additions to the list included the sister cities of Santa Clara and Ivins (debuting together at number five), and Santaquin and Genola (debuting together at number six).
Contact a Salt Lake City Defense Lawyer if You Were Charged with a Crime
Even in Utah’s safest cities, visitors and residents are still arrested for serious criminal offenses. In fact, the Utah Department of Public Safety’s most recent crime report shows that Utah arrests related to robbery, rape, aggravated assault, larceny (theft), arson, and burglary all increased from 2014 to 2015. As a Salt Lake robbery lawyer, Darwin Overson has seen that many of these arrests are unjust, lack probable cause, or are based on faulty evidence or misidentification of suspects.
If you have been charged with a crime in Utah, if you suspect that you are under investigation for a crime, or if a family member has been arrested and charged with committing a crime, skilled legal defense is crucial to protect your constitutional rights.
